Falkland Islands - Magellanic Penguins
These pictures of the Magellanic Penguins were taken at the back end of the breeding season 2006/07 which runs from September to the following March.
Consequently the only chicks visible are already fully grown and have lost most of their first coat,they can be seen in the group photographs as the ones with the fluffy grey patches on their coat in various stages of moult(the old feathers are pushed out by the new ones growing underneath) into the smooth black and white waterproof coat of the adults.
The Magellanic Penguin is known on the Falkland Islands as the "Jackass Penguin" due to the raucous braying sound they make.
